Praying the News

news on smart phone

I am a person who does want to watch, listen to and read about the news to stay current on issues and concerns, learn new things, and know about where I am living. But, I have to be careful when and where and how I engage with the news. For one, I have a 9 year old who can get really nervous when some tough stories are shared. But, I can also completely derail and go down a path trying to search for more information or the facts or I can get so frustrated by some of what I hear in the news that I struggle to find the motivation to get my daily tasks done. The constant news reel and stream of information can be overwhelming and daunting. Recently, Pastor Marilyn Lange from Bethel Lutheran Church in Green Bay, WI shared this concept of “Praying the News.” With some adaptions to her strategies, I have been trying to pray with and through the news some this week and invite you to do the same.

1. DID THE NEWS PINCH YOU WHEN YOU READ IT?

Pray the Pinch

God, this news story pinched my spirit. Help me to understand why this hurt. Help me to have empathy and compassion for those I disagree with. Heal my hurt, knowing that sometimes that looks like stepping in further conversation and other times stepping away from unhealthy situations. Help me to move through and beyond this pinch. Amen

2. DID THIS NEWS STIR UP GRIEF?

Lament

God, this news story stirred up painful grief within me. Help me to be gentle with myself as I experience these feelings. Help me care for my aching sprit with lovingkindness. Give me courage to reach out if I am feeling overwhelmed. Amen

3. DID THIS NEWS ANGER YOU?

Take a Breath

God, this story stirred up feelings of anger within me. Help me pause and take a deep breath. Give me perspective and clarity in knowing what to do with these feelings, always seeking to respond from a place of grace and not rage. Amen

4. IS THIS NEWS STORY FOR REAL?

Check it Out

God, help me to discern what is truth from what is born of conspiracy or chaos. Point me to fact checking information and reliable, reputable sources. Amen.

5. LEAD ME TO STORIES OF HOPE.

Seek Inspiration

Lord, help me to find stories that inspire me and give me hope. Guide me to stories that can help me engage in issues I care about and stories that can help guide how I can make a positive difference in my community, the nation, and the world. Show me leaders in society I wish to follow. Amen

Prayer for today...

Dear God, the pep in my step just isn’t there today. Lead me to a space and place of refreshment and replenishment. Jump start my spirit within me so that I may serve you with a renewed heart. Amen
