Meditation on Psalm 139

woman thinking

Help me, O Lord. I am covered by the darkness. The day around me is like night. I feel far from your presence and far from everything I used to care about. Sometimes I think you don’t know what I am going through or how much grief hurts. But I believe your word. You created the light to shine and drive out the darkness. The darkness is not dark to you—night is as bright as day. Darkness and light are alike to you.

Sometimes I do not believe you exist and that I am just kidding myself about a God who cares for me. But I believe your word. Even when I doubt you, I cannot escape from your presence. Wherever I go, you are there, and you will lead me and keep me from falling. You already know all my griefs and worries, even before I express them. You hold my hand.

Sometimes I feel worthless and wish I had never been born. I compare myself to things around me and feel like I don’t measure up. I feel ashamed of all my faults and failings. But I believe your word. You are the one who created me in my mother’s womb, binding all my genes and characteristics into your unique being that is me. I know that everything you create is wonderful, and that includes me. It is more than I can comprehend, but I believe you. I will praise and thank you, Lord, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

O God, search my heart and my thoughts. Forgive the things I have done that are not pleasing to you. Show me what you would like me to change to be a better disciple. Keep leading me, O Lord, and I will follow you. Amen.

You Are Mine
I will come to you in the silence
I will lift you from all your fear
You will hear My voice
I claim you as My choice
Be still, and know I am near
I am hope for all who are hopeless
I am eyes for all who long to see
In the shadows of the night,
I will be your light
Come and rest in Me
I am strength for all the despairing
Healing for the ones who dwell in shame
All the blind will see, the lame will all run free
And all will know My name
I am the Word that leads all to freedom
I am the peace the world cannot give
I will call your name, embracing all your pain
Stand up, now, walk, and live
Do not be afraid, I am with you
I have called you each by name
Come and follow Me
I will bring you home
I love you and you are mine.
